Ingredients

  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips or chunks
  • Optional: 1 cup chopped nuts walnuts or pecans

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream butter and sugars together in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. This step is crucial for texture.
  3. Add eggs and vanilla, mixing until fully combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring gently to avoid overmixing.
  6. Fold in chocolate chips (and nuts, if using). The dough should be thick but scoopable.
  7. Scoop dough into tablespoon-sized balls and place them 2 inches apart on prepared sheets.
  8. Bake for 9–11 minutes, until the edges are golden but centers are still slightly soft.
  9. Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

For chewier cookies, underbake slightly and let them finish setting on the pan.
For crispier cookies, extend baking by 1–2 minutes.
